The power of gracious behavior
It’s always heartwarming when I see really gracious, polite behavior, and not just because I’m an etiquette consultant. When I see people being courteous and other focused I am reminded of how powerful it is.
I witnessed a lot of well-mannered behavior at the Corporate Citizenship Awards hosted by the Puget Sound Business Journal that was very impressive.
As I was mingling during the reception, I ran into a colleague I hadn’t seen for many years. In fact, I don’t think we had seen each other since I founded Clise Etiquette. Ellen was so warm and friendly. In addition to her warmth, she was terrific at making introductions.
Every person who walked up to her was greeted kindly and was quickly introduced to others in the circle surrounding her. But, Ellen didn’t just say our names during the introduction; she made sure she shared news-worthy information about each person she was introducing. That not only made each of us feel special, it also allowed us to have something to talk about with the other person. That is how to make a great introduction.
A bit later, as I was seated at the table, a former employee joined our group. I was thrilled to see her! I adored this employee because she was such a pleasure to work with. Jenifer was always polite, respectful and appreciative. She made me feel like a great manager, even though I know I had my weak points. But, that’s just who she is, a kind, gracious person.
Jenifer, also did a wonderful job of introducing me to her colleagues at the table by sharing information about each of us that the other would find interesting. She is such a lovely person, and I would bend over backward to help her in any way.
During the program, I witnessed more courteous behavior. Many of the award recipients gave credit to others for their success. They pointed out how individuals or other companies helped their companies stand out. We all know it takes a village to be successful, so it’s always nice when those in the spotlight share the light with others.
I left the event with a smile on my face and a feeling of well-being thanks to the lovely people I got to see. And, there is nothing more wonderful than that.
What gracious behavior have you witnessed that makes you feel good about yourself? Are there things you try to do to be a well-mannered person?
